2022 Skills for a digital future survey

The Institution of Engineering and Technology commissioned YouGov to run a survey assessing the UK’s digital skills gap, its impact on employers, and potential solutions to the challenge. The results show that there is a digital skills gap in the technology sector, and that this is having a serious impact on business according to engineering employers. Fortunately, these employers believe their workforce is agile and offer solutions to the gaps.

There are several key issues that come into focus. We can see nearly half of employers in the sector employ staff who use robotics or use software in conjunction with AI and machine learning.  A third have staff using virtual or mixed reality in the course of their work.

At the same time, over half of employers in the field, see a technical skills gap in the external labour market, with under half seeing such a skills gap in their own workforce

Half of employers believe there are consequences marked out in lost productivity and restricted growth.
